So Chris and I are in bit of a quandary when it comes to picking names for the kiddos. While many parents-to-be spend a bunch of time sifting through and debating first names for their kids, where we're really struggling is on what to do about last names, since we both kept our own last names. While we will respectfully pass on any suggestions, advice or judgment you have to offer about first names, we thought it would be fun to get some perspective from the peanut gallery on what we should do about last names. As a caveat, we reserve the right to disregard the will of the majority.
Here are the possibilities we've come up with so far (in no particular order). Cast your vote for your favorite option!
(a) have one Dedrick and one Gorman (how lucky are we to be getting twins?!)
(b) flip a coin off the babies' toes with one name heads and the other tails; whichever side the coin lands on, give both kids that name
(c) make up a new name that involves some combination of our names (e.g. Dedman, Gordrick, or O'Dedrick (giving homage to Chris' Irish roots))
(d) write-in your own idea
We are both in agreement that hyphenating is not an option, so don't bother making that your write-in candidate;-)
I vote for option B and definitely think they should both have the same last name (just say "no" to option A!) Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI am a fan of the "O'Dedrick" and "Dedman" options.
ReplyDeleteAnd yet, I am faced with the difficulty in knowing how to refer to you as a collective. "Liznchris" slides off the tongue easily enough, but what to do with two more names, it will become quite cumbersome.
Or maybe I'll vote D - "Them" or "Us"
(I'm sure I've been no help, whatsoever)
You raise some very salient points! My friend Kristi, who did not change her name when she got married, thought it would be too confusing if they created a new name or had different names. What was important to her was that her family name was represented somewhere, so all their children have her last name as their second middle name and her husband's last name as their last name.
ReplyDeleteor.....
Create a brand new last name for all our you- I vote for "Fabulous"- Liz and Chris Fabulous.
I am all for B, when my mother and mother in law insisted I name our girl after them I decided to combine their first names Darlene and Lynda into Dar'Lyn .. of course the birth records can not do it like that so it became Dar-Lyn..I love coming up with unique names !
ReplyDeleteWhatever you do, please let them have the same last name.
ReplyDeleteB sounds good.
After that, if combining, I like Gorrick or Gormick best without the 'd' in the middle. Easier to say and more split down the middle. I like the suggestion of the parents changing to the combined name too.
~Amy, friend of Sarah's, like way out in the nosebleed section of the peanut gallery. =D
